Review: The Atrix 4G Laptop Dock

March 8th, 2011 posted by admin

The Atrix 4G laptop dock could come out as one of the best valuable accessories of the decade.

The screen of the laptop dock has a size of about 11.6 inches slantwise with a somewhat crowded keyboard and a big touchpad. It has two USB ports, a couple of stereo speakers and a regular headphone jack. The dock can charge the Atrix while connected to it since it has its own battery. Unfortunately, the dock is not equipped with a front-facing camera so video chat is not possible.

You would have a mini view of your phone on the laptop dock while it is connected to the Atrix so you can pretty much answer and make calls or text your messages.

One of the best features of the laptop dock is its having a Firebox Web browser. You can read your emails and check other websites. It is also equipped with a built-in HD media playback application similar to the Apple. You can watch a full screen movie or view photos. It has a PDF reader, a file browser and some additional web applications.

The laptop dock has a weight of about 2.4 pounds, feels light and slender enough but with a solid and durable feeling when its lid is closed down.

However, the Atrix4G laptop dock has its disadvantages. It is not a genuine computer. If it is not connected to the Atrix phone, the dock is entirely useless. The dock’s screen is not touch-free-capable so you can’t apply touch actions like you could do on your phone.

It has no Chrome browser and applications. It would have been more desirable if it could combine its Android system with a Chrome browser as an advanced technology in the future.

It has limitations when editing documents as you have to rely on the phone screen to see the documents and you have to make it bigger on the dock screen to make it workable. It can’t play music files in the background.

The biggest disadvantage is its high price, almost like equine insurance. The dock costs somewhere around $500; combined with Atrix phone it costs $300 with a monthly fee for the phone plan you choose. With said prices you can buy an iPad, a mini laptop or an Atom Netbook.

For all it’s worth, the Atrix 4G laptop dock is an advanced technology in itself.
